Question
How to Start a Remote Software Upgrade on your BMW?
Answer
Before starting any of these steps, please make sure your vehicle is parked in a safe place. We suggest parking your vehicle either at home or at work. Be sure you have enough time to update as the vehicle cannot be used for 20 minutes during the installation process.
Step 1.
When an update is available, you will receive a notification either on your phone or your car.
Step 2.
The next time you are driving, and the update has downloaded successfully, it is pre-installed to your BMW. *The Upgrade can only be displayed approx. 30-60 minutes after engine switch-off because the engine needs to cool down. The prompt is displayed before engine start. The next time you enter your vehicle, please do the installation before starting the engine and wait until the installation prompt is displayed.
Step 3.
Track your progress via your BMW’s display under Car> Settings> General Settings> Remote Software Upgrade.
Step 4.
After stopping the engine, the system will ask you to perform the Remote Software Upgrade. Follow the instructions on the display. Final installation occurs when car is standing still.
Step 5.
Safely park your BMW to complete the installation as vehicle cannot be used for 20 minutes. If all requirements have been met, the update will start automatically.
Step 6.
Leave and lock vehicle during upgrade. In the unlikely case that the programming fails, the vehicle will not start. In this case, please contact Roadside Assistance, call: 1-800-267-8BMW (8269).
